The Norwegian municipality of Arendal has joined Lerwick and other northern European locations as the fifth and final host port for The Tall Ships Races in summer, 2023.
The announcement was made today (Friday 17 December 2021) by Tall Ships Races International, a subsidiary of Sail Training International.
The fleet will race from Den Helder, Netherlands to Hartlepool in north-east England, and Fredrikstad, Norway, before a cruise-in-company to Lerwick, arriving on or before Wednesday 26 July. Following a parade of sail, they will depart on Saturday 29 July for Race 3 on the 360 nautical miles to Arendal, on the south coast of Norway for a visit from 3-6 August.
Arendal will welcome the Tall Ships fleet for the first time during a year of celebrations for its 300th anniversary.
Captain Calum Grains, Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted Arendal has joined the spectacular event and look forward to working with them. Following the disruption caused by Covid, having a fifth port added to the route really makes it something to look forward to. Preparations locally for a full programme of entertainment is gathering pace through Shetland Tall Ships Limited for our third time hosting the event at Lerwick.”
Lerwick’s participation was announced in May.
