Another successful project has added to Lerwick Harbour’s long track record at the forefront of decommissioning structures and materials for the offshore oil & gas industry.
Phoenix Decom, a leading specialist in recycling waste, has completed processing 13.5 kilometres (740 tonnes) of subsea mooring ropes at its Greenhead Base quayside facility which includes a 2,400 square metre heavy duty pad developed by Lerwick Port Authority,
Delivered in four shipments over 16 days, the project utilised a new material handler and a mobile shear unit, part of a £1 million investment by Phoenix since arriving in the Shetland port last year.
Aberdeen-headquartered Phoenix Decom Managing Director, Craig Smith, said: “Expanding into Lerwick is opening new opportunities for us, with the local supply chain, including available skilled labour, a key to completing this project and attracting further work. The industry recognises the advantages of this strategic location for decommissioning.”
In another project, three shipments of up to 500 tonnes of concrete mattresses, grout and steelwork, are being delivered to Lerwick during September for recycling.
