Lerwick Port Authority has teamed up with energy partners to promote “Shetland – Islands of Opportunity” at the renewables All-Energy exhibition and conference in Glasgow on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May.

The deep-water, sheltered harbour, with its Dales Voe and Greenhead bases, is positioned to support the lifecycle of energy transition projects, from installation to decommissioning, including the nearby NE1 offshore windfarm sites.

Port Authority Chief Executive, Captain Calum Grains, said: “As well as raising awareness of the harbour’s capabilities alongside our own net zero actions, All-Energy provides a platform to share Shetland’s vision to be a green energy hub at the forefront of the just transition.”

With over five decades of experience in the onshore and offshore energy industries, the port’’s existing capabilities and potential future expansion will play a frontline role in securing Shetland’s transition to net zero.

Future expansion includes the creation of 250,000m² marshalling areas and the UK’s first Ultra-Deep-Water Quay project. With an initial water depth of 21 metres alongside, and an option to dredge further to 24-25 metres, plus additional laydown, Lerwick will be the only UK port to offer an alongside water depth capable of providing a tow-to-port option for operators to bring turbines in one piece, including substructures.

State-of-the-art infrastructure includes:

• Strategic, competitive location near potential offshore developments

• All-weather port, with twin entrances and 24-hour operation

• 4,500+ metres of quays, including deep-water berths to 12.5m c.d.

• Unique heavy-duty quaysides at 60T/m² plus 800 tonne per metre line loading behind the quayside

• Existing 130,000 m² of quayside working areas, open storage and laydown, with major expansion potential with an additional 250,000 m².

Joining the Authority on stand SHE70 at the SEC arena are: Shetland Islands Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Norn Alliance, Peterson, Arven Offshore Wind Farm, Stoura Offshore Wind Farm, Shetland Aerogenerators, Statkraft and Veri Energy.
