Round Britain & Ireland race returns

Lerwick is again a port-of-call for this month’s Round Britain & Ireland yacht race, with entrants expected to start arriving from Tuesday 21 May, depending on sailing conditions.

Competing yachts will have a mandatory 48-hour stopover at Albert Dock.

Organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club, the 16th race began on Sunday 12 May in Plymouth and will return there via stopovers at Galway, in Ireland, Lerwick, and Blyth, England.

The race first called at Lerwick in 1966, and most recently in 2022. Lerwick Boating Club is an official supporter and provides local liaison. The race is expected to become a biennial competition, rather than every four years, in the years ahead.

Alexander Simpson, Lerwick Port Authority’s Harbourmaster, said: “Competitors in the Round Britain & Ireland race are always welcome in Shetland, and we look forward to this year’s event as one of the highlights of our marine tourism season. The revised schedule is great news with the potential of attracting new competitors in the years ahead.”

Lerwick attracts over 500 yachts annually, with this year’s arrivals to include entries in the long-established annual Shetland-Bergen Race, with crews in port between 19-23 June.
